Jennifer Jane Saunders (born 6 July 1958) is an English comedienne, actress and writer. She was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Saunders became widely known for her long professional partnership with Dawn French, with whom she co-created and co-starred in the sketch show French and Saunders, a programme that blended parody, character sketches and affectionate satire of popular culture.
Early career and breakthrough
After training and performing in comedy on the British club and television circuit, Saunders developed a reputation for character work and sharp writing. Her partnership with French began in the early 1980s and led to television specials, stage tours and a growing profile that opened opportunities in both British and international television. The success of these early projects established Saunders as a leading figure in contemporary British comedy.
Absolutely Fabulous and major projects
Saunders created and starred in Absolutely Fabulous, a sitcom that satirised celebrity culture, fashion and the excesses of a certain social set. The series featured a memorable ensemble including Joanna Lumley, June Whitfield, and younger co-stars, and became a defining work of 1990s British comedy. Beyond television, Saunders has worked in film and theatre, and has made guest appearances on international shows.
International work and voice roles
Saunders has appeared as a guest on American sitcoms, bringing British comic sensibilities to a wider audience; examples include appearances on series such as Roseanne and Friends. In animation she reached family audiences by providing the voice of the Fairy Godmother in the DreamWorks feature produced by DreamWorks, appearing in the popular film Shrek 2.
Style and influence
Saunders's work is often character-driven and satirical, combining observational humour with exaggerated, larger-than-life personalities. She helped normalize female-led comedy at prime time, creating protagonists who were flawed, outrageous and sympathetic in equal measure. Her writing often mixes social commentary with farce, and her characters remain influential for later generations of comedians and writers.
Recognition and legacy
Over her career Saunders has received critical recognition and a range of honours for performance and writing. Her programmes remain widely cited in discussions of British television comedy and have been the subject of revivals, retrospectives and critical study. She is regarded as a seminal figure in late 20th- and early 21st-century British entertainment.
