Jean Rey (Belgian politician, President of the European Commission)

Early life and national career

Born in Belgium in 1902, Rey trained and worked in fields typical of mid‑twentieth century public figures before entering national politics. He belonged to the liberal political tradition in Belgium and established a reputation that later led to roles in European institutions. His background combined legal and political experience with an interest in international cooperation.

Roles in the European institutions

Rey was appointed to the first directly constituted College of Commissioners that began work in 1958.
