Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi (born Subramanyam Mahadeva; 18 July 1935 – 28 February 2018) was an Indian Hindu religious leader who served as the 69th Shankaracharya and pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. He led the monastic institution from 22 March 1954 until his death. He was born in Irulneeki in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, and is widely remembered for combining traditional Vedic duties with active social and educational work. Appointed as head of the Kanchi math at a young age, Jayendra Saraswathi performed the primary religious, ritual and administrative functions associated with a Shankaracharya.
