Ilir Meta (born 24 March 1969) is a prominent Albanian politician and diplomat who has held several of the country’s highest offices. Over a multi-decade career he has served as prime minister, foreign minister, chairman of parliament and, most recently, president. His roles have made him a central figure in Albania’s post-1990 political development.
Political career and offices
Meta’s career spans executive and legislative leadership. He was Prime Minister of Albania from 1999 to 2002, serving during a period of political transition and institutional consolidation. He has held the office of Minister of Foreign Affairs on two occasions and was elected Chairman (Speaker) of the Parliament from 2013 to 2017. From 24 July 2017 until 24 July 2022 he served as President of Albania; for more on that period see his presidency. Earlier executive experience is summarized in accounts of his term as Prime Minister and in records of his time as Chairman of the Parliament.
Party building and political orientation
Meta founded the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI), a political party that broke away from the main socialist current and has often played a kingmaker role in coalition politics. The LSI has positioned itself as a centrist, social-democratic force and has influenced coalition formation and policy direction in several governments.
Role and significance
Throughout his career Meta has been known for pragmatic coalition-building and for navigating Albania’s often-fractious party system. As foreign minister he represented Albania’s interests abroad and contributed to policies aimed at Euro-Atlantic integration. As president he occupied a largely ceremonial but symbolically important role in representing the state and ensuring constitutional continuity.
Controversies and public profile
Like many long-serving politicians, Meta’s career has included episodes of intense political dispute. He has been a polarizing public figure at times, drawing both strong support and criticism. Observers note his impact on Albania’s party alignments and electoral strategies.
