Tun Hussein Onn

Early life and political rise

Born into a politically active family, Hussein Onn entered public service and rose through the ranks of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He held ministerial posts and served in senior government roles before becoming deputy prime minister. In 1976, following the death of Tun Abdul Razak, Hussein Onn was chosen as prime minister by his party and coalition partners.

Prime ministership (1976–1981)

As prime minister he emphasized social cohesion, law and order, and steady economic development. He continued implementation of the New Economic Policy (NEP), which aimed to reduce poverty and restructure the economy to address ethnic imbalances. His government prioritized rural development, public administration and policies intended to promote interethnic harmony.

Policies, cabinet and succession

• Maintained NEP objectives and programs begun earlier in the decade.
• Focused on public sector stability and nation‑building initiatives.
• Appointed a leadership team that included figures who would shape later decades; he stepped down in 1981 because of ill health and was succeeded by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
