Howard Donald (born 28 April 1968) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known as a founding member of the Manchester-based pop group Take That. Over several decades he has performed as a vocalist, drummer and dancer, contributing both onstage and behind the scenes to the band's music and live shows.
Overview and role
Donald joined Take That at the group's inception and remained a core member through its initial run, later reunions and subsequent albums. Within the ensemble he is commonly associated with percussion and backing vocals, and has co-written material for the band. His stage presence and musicianship have been part of the collective identity that helped the group become one of Britain's most successful pop acts.
Career development
Take That formed in the early 1990s and achieved widespread commercial success, then went through a break-up and later reformation. Donald's career mirrors that arc: he performed on the band's early hits, took part in its re-formation, and continued to tour and record on new projects. Outside the group he has pursued musical and performance-related activities, including work as a DJ and involvement in studio sessions.
Notable aspects and public image
Donald has often maintained a lower public profile than some of his bandmates, focusing attention on performance and musicianship rather than solo celebrity. He is respected within the pop world for his steady contribution to a large-scale pop act and for helping sustain a long-running career in a changing music industry.
