Gert-Jan Maarten Segers (born 9 July 1969 in Lisse) is a Dutch politician, author and commentator. He is associated with the ChristianUnion (ChristenUnie) and has served in the national parliament since 2012. Segers has combined party leadership and parliamentary duties with a public role as a writer and columnist, bringing together faith-based perspectives and policy expertise.
Early life and education
Segers studied political science at Leiden University, where he developed an early interest in international affairs and public policy. After university he spent several years living and working abroad: he served as a missionary in Egypt for an extended period, an experience that shaped his later focus on Muslim–Western relations. He later completed graduate studies in Middle Eastern affairs at the school of international studies of Johns Hopkins University, concentrating on Western–Islam relations and the Middle East.
Political and professional career
Before entering elected office, Segers worked within Christian political circles and media: he served as an assistant to the parliamentary group of a Christian political predecessor, and had a brief period as a radio journalist. He also led the research institute affiliated with the ChristianUnion, where he oversaw policy studies and publications. Elected to the House of Representatives in 2012, Segers became parliamentary leader and party leader in 2015. His parliamentary interests include foreign policy, development cooperation, migration and social issues shaped by a Christian democratic outlook.
Writing, commentary and public positions
Segers is the author of both fiction and nonfiction works, addressing themes of faith, politics and international affairs. He writes regularly as a columnist for Dutch Christian media and contributes opinion pieces on ethics in public life. His public voice often emphasizes the role of faith-based values in shaping policy, while also drawing on his Middle East experience when commenting on international crises and interreligious relations.
Areas of emphasis and public profile
- International relations and Middle East expertise, informed by his time in Egypt and graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University.
- Social and family policy grounded in Christian-democratic principles advocated through the ChristianUnion.
- Engagement with questions of migration, development aid and interreligious dialogue, reflecting his studies of Western–Islam relations and the Middle East.
Segers identifies with the Reformed tradition of Protestantism (Reformed Christian) and has used his writing to explore how religious convictions intersect with public responsibilities. His combined roles—as parliamentarian, party leader, researcher and author—have made him a prominent voice in the Netherlands on matters where faith, policy and international affairs meet.
