George I of Great Britain: Elector of Hanover and founder of the Hanoverian line

Background and succession

Born into the Brunswick‑Lüneburg family, George had extensive territories and interests in north Germany. Before 1714 he ruled as Elector of Hanover. The exclusion of Catholic claimants under the Act of Settlement led to his selection as the nearest Protestant heir, despite limited fluency in English and a strong attachment to his German domains.

Reign and government

George I’s reign (1714–1727) saw the consolidation of constitutional practices that favored ministerial government. He relied on experienced ministers and ministers’ councils to conduct British affairs. The period included the Jacobite rising of 1715, an attempt to restore the Stuart line, and the rise of prominent political figures who managed the day‑to‑day business of state.
