Ljubica "Gabre" Gabric (17 October 1914 – 16 December 2015) was a Croatian-born Italian track and field athlete best known for the discus throw. Born in what is today Croatia, she competed internationally for Italy in the years before and after World War II. Her documented personal best in the discus was 43.35 m, recorded in 1939. For notes on her origins and early life see biographical notes and for statistics and records see athletics records.

Athletic career and achievements

Gabric represented Italy at two Olympic Games, appearing at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and then again at the 1948 London Olympics. Competing on both sides of the wartime interruption, she exemplified the longevity of an athlete whose career spanned a difficult historical period for international sport. Her 1939 mark placed her among the more accomplished European women discus throwers of that late-1930s era.

  • Olympic appearances: 1936 (Berlin) and 1948 (London)
  • Specialty event: discus throw (personal best 43.35 m, 1939)
  • Active internationally across the 1930s and 1940s, with national-level competitions in Italy

Context and technique

Women’s athletics in Gabric’s era differed from later decades in training methods, equipment and competitive opportunities. Discus technique has long combined strength, balance and the ability to generate rotational speed; athletes of Gabric’s generation worked with the coaching knowledge and implements then available. The interruption of major championships during World War II affected preparation and competition for many athletes, making prewar and postwar continuity notable. For broader historical context see historical athletics summaries.

Personal life and legacy

Gabric was connected to a well-known Italian athletics family. She was the widow of coach Sandro Calvesi, mother-in-law of Olympic hurdler Eddy Ottoz and grandmother of athletes Laurent Ottoz and Patrick Ottoz. Living to the age of 101, she remained a reference point in retrospective accounts of early Italian women in track and field.
