Forouzan (Persian: فروزان; 9 August 1937 – 24 January 2016) was an Iranian actress, film producer and dubbing artist who became a prominent face of popular cinema in Iran during the 1960s and 1970s. She began her career in the entertainment industry as a voice dubber and soon moved into acting, developing a screen persona that made her one of the better-known performers of the pre‑revolution era.

Career and screen work

Forouzan's first notable screen appearance came in Siamak Yasemi's Sahel-e Entezar (1964), but it was her role in Yasemi's Ganj-e Qarun that brought widespread recognition and commercial success. Over the following decade she frequently played leading parts in melodramas and popular films produced for mass audiences, and she also took on responsibilities behind the camera as a producer. Her work combined the melodramatic and romantic conventions common to Iranian commercial cinema of the period.

Notable films

  • Sahel-e Entezar (early credited screen role)
  • Ganj-e Qarun (breakthrough film that raised her national profile)

Historical context and later life

The 1979 Iranian Revolution brought major shifts to the country's film industry and cultural policies. Like many actors associated with the earlier commercial cinema, Forouzan's public career came to an end after the revolution. She lived away from the screen for the remainder of her life, making only occasional public appearances and remaining a subject of interest for film historians and fans of pre‑1979 Iranian popular culture.

Legacy

Forouzan is remembered as a symbol of the Pahlavi‑era popular film scene and as a performer who helped define a particular model of female stardom in Iran's mid‑20th century cinema. Her films continued to be viewed by later generations, and she retained recognition among Iranians born after 1979 who discovered earlier domestic films through retrospectives and private collections. She is often cited in discussions of the period's industry, its stars, and the cultural changes that followed the revolution.

Forouzan died in Tehran on 24 January 2016 at the age of 78.
