Overview

Florentinus Ludovicus Leopoldus Eduard "Flor" Van Noppen (28 June 1956 – 22 September 2014) was a Belgian politician associated with the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA). He represented his party at both municipal and national levels. Van Noppen's public life combined local municipal duties with two terms in the federal Chamber of Representatives; he is also remembered for his personal struggle with a progressive neurological illness.

Political career

Van Noppen's formal political service spanned more than a decade. At the local level he served as a city councilor in Dessel from 2001 until 2014 and held the position of alderman from 2007 to 2013. Nationally, he was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in 2007 and was re-elected in 2010. After the 2014 elections he stepped down from politics upon completing his term; his retirement was linked to his deteriorating health.

Personal background and family

Born in 1956, Van Noppen belonged to a family whose name became widely known in Belgium beyond politics. His brother, veterinary surgeon Karel Van Noppen, was the victim of a high-profile murder that drew attention to illegal practices in the livestock and food sectors often described in media accounts as the activities of a "hormone mafia." That family tragedy contributed to public discussion about food safety and criminal networks that tamper with animal husbandry.

Illness and death

In later years Flor Van Noppen was diagnosed with multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, coordination and autonomic bodily functions. For information about the condition see multiple system atrophy. Van Noppen retired from active politics after finishing his parliamentary term and died from complications of the disease on 22 September 2014 at the age of 58.

Legacy and notable facts

Van Noppen is principally remembered for his combined local and national service with the N-VA and for the public profile of his family following his brother's murder. His career illustrates the intersection of municipal governance and national representation in Belgium's political system. Key facts include:
