Ferydoon Zandi (born 26 April 1979) is a retired Iranian–German footballer who later moved into coaching. Born to Iranian parents in Germany, Zandi combined European club experience with international representation, choosing to play for the Iran national team while spending most of his club career in German-speaking leagues.
Playing career
Zandi was best known as an attacking midfielder and playmaker, capable of creating chances, arriving late into the box and taking set pieces. During his professional career he played for several clubs across Germany, Austria and Iran. Among his clubs he had a spell at Steel Azin, and he also appeared regularly in European lower divisions and second-tier teams where he developed his technical and tactical game.
International career
Eligible for both Germany and Iran by birth and descent, Zandi elected to represent Iran at senior level. He earned multiple caps for Iran and contributed goals and assists in regional competitions and qualification campaigns. His international experience raised his profile and connected him to football communities in both Europe and Asia.
Style and strengths
Zandi combined vision and ball control with a left-footed delivery that made him effective on free kicks and crosses. He was valued for tactical intelligence, a willingness to track back when required, and an ability to link midfield and attack. Coaches often deployed him centrally or slightly advanced behind a striker.
Coaching and later work
After retiring from playing, Zandi remained in the game as a coach and manager, working at club level and mentoring younger players. His bicultural background has proved useful in bridging playing styles and adapting training methods from different footballing cultures.
