Ernest Moniz (born December 22, 1944) is an American nuclear physicist and policy advisor known for combining scientific research with public service. He served as United States Secretary of Energy from May 2013 to January 2017 in the administration of Barack Obama, where he handled issues ranging from energy technology and climate policy to nuclear security.

Moniz trained as a physicist, completing undergraduate studies and a doctorate in physics before joining the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
