Ernest Simoni Troshani (born 18 October 1928) is an Albanian Roman Catholic priest who was raised to the rank of cardinal in the consistory of 19 November 2016 by Pope Francis. Born in the village of Troshani, Albania, he is widely recognized for his long witness to faith during and after Albania's communist period.
Overview
Simoni became known beyond Albania because of his testimony about religious persecution under the country's communist government. He endured imprisonment, hard labour and restrictions on ministry that were part of broader anti-religious policies. After political changes in Albania he resumed public pastoral work and received international attention for his humility and personal testimony.
Life and ministry
Born in Troshani, he entered the priesthood and served local communities for decades. During the communist era he suffered repeated harassment, detention and forced labour, yet he continued to practice and defend his faith when circumstances allowed. With the collapse of strict state atheism in Albania, he returned to more open ministry and became a moral example for Catholics and others in his country.
Significance and recognition
His elevation to the College of Cardinals was seen as recognition of the suffering endured by clergy under persecution and of the strength of lay and clerical witness in places where religious freedom was suppressed. Simoni's story has been cited by church leaders as an example of courage, forgiveness and pastoral dedication.
