Overview
Donald Laurie Edwards (born September 28, 1955) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player from Hamilton, Ontario. Best known as a steady goaltender, Edwards played roughly ten seasons in the National Hockey League, spending the bulk of his career with the Buffalo Sabres and later appearing with the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He earned recognition in the late 1970s and early 1980s for dependable play at the crease and several league honors.
Career highlights
Edwards enjoyed a string of prominent seasons that produced both individual awards and memorable moments. In 1980 he was co-recipient of the Vezina Trophy, sharing the award with teammate Bob Sauve for their combined excellence in goal. He was selected to play in NHL All-Star Games in 1980 and 1982 and served as a backup on the Canadian squad during the 1981 Canada Cup, supporting starter Mike Liut.
One of the more cited moments of his career occurred on February 24, 1982, when Edwards surrendered the 77th goal of the season to Wayne Gretzky. That goal, scored against the Edmonton Oilers in Buffalo, broke a single-season mark previously held by Phil Esposito and became part of Gretzky’s record-setting 92-goal campaign.
Playing style and role
Throughout his NHL tenure Edwards was regarded as a reliable netminder who provided stability for his teams. While not always the flashiest player, he combined sound positioning, calm rebound control and an ability to perform under pressure in important games. His partnership in net with other goalies—particularly during the season that yielded the shared Vezina—made him an integral piece of team defence schemes and a goaltender teams could trust through long stretches.
Legacy and importance
Edwards’ career is notable both for the awards he earned and for the historical moments in which he participated. Sharing the Vezina highlighted his place among the league’s better goalies of that era, and his presence in events such as All-Star Games and international tournaments reflected that standing. The association with Gretzky’s 1982 scoring record is a frequently cited footnote: it ties Edwards to one of hockey’s most famous single-season achievements.
After hockey
Following his playing days Edwards has remained part of the hockey community through alumni events and public appearances; former NHL players of his generation commonly take part in coaching clinics, charity games and local initiatives that support the sport. His career continues to be recalled by fans of the Sabres and by students of NHL history as an example of a dependable, team-oriented goaltender from a competitive era.
