Cornelius was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Early in his media career he worked in broadcast roles that led to national television opportunities. His life and work are often discussed in histories of American music television; a regional profile appears at Chicago resources.

Soul Train: format and influence

Launched in the early 1970s, Soul Train combined live musical performances, guest appearances by top R&B and soul artists, and studio dance segments that showcased audience members and dancers. The program helped introduce new recording artists to wider audiences and documented changing fashions and dance trends. For background on the program's cultural role, see Soul Train background.

Typical characteristics of the show included:

  • Live or lip-synced performances by popular musical acts.
  • Camera focus on dancers and studio crowds as a central visual element.
  • Short announcer segments and interviews led by Cornelius.

Cornelius served as both host and executive producer for many years, shaping the program's tone and national syndication strategy. His measured delivery and signoffs became part of the program's identity.

Beyond television, the Soul Train brand extended into special broadcasts, recordings, and cultural commentary. Cornelius's work is cited in discussions of representation in broadcast media and the mainstreaming of African American music forms; see media studies.

In his personal life, Cornelius married and divorced more than once; sources note marriages referenced in biographical records and public reports. Later in life he lived in California. His death on February 1, 2012, in Sherman Oaks, California, was ruled a suicide by gunshot, a fact reported in contemporary news coverage and official statements; see reports.
