He has represented Virginia's 8th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2015; the district includes Arlington, Alexandria and nearby suburbs of Washington, D.C. As a public figure he is known for combining a private-sector background with posts in diplomatic and elected office. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2009 to 2013 during the administration of President Barack Obama.
Business and early career
Beyer made his early reputation in the private sector as an entrepreneur and auto industry executive. Over several decades he was involved in automotive retail and civic business groups in the Washington region. Beyer has also been active in local civic organizations and charitable causes tied to economic development.
Electoral politics and public service
In the 1990s Beyer emerged as a leading Democratic figure in Virginia. He won statewide attention as his party's nominee for governor in 1997, a race in which he lost to Republican Jim Gilmore. After that campaign he continued to be involved in both state and national politics and later accepted a diplomatic appointment as ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Since his election to Congress, Beyer has focused on issues that reflect his background and constituency. Major themes of his work include transportation and infrastructure, consumer and auto buyer protections, environmental policy and climate-related initiatives, and health-care access.
