Territory and organization

The diocese covers areas corresponding largely to contemporary civil divisions, including Jämtland County and Västernorrland County. Its internal structure follows customary Church of Sweden patterns: a bishop leads the diocese, supported by clergy, parish councils and diocesan administrative bodies. The diocese coordinates worship, education, heritage care and social outreach across urban and rural parishes.

History and development

Founded during the 17th century reorganization of the Swedish church, the Diocese of Härnösand developed as settlement and administration expanded in the north. In the early 20th century a major territorial change took place: in 1904 the most northerly parishes were separated to form the Diocese of Luleå, reflecting population growth and the need for more locally based ecclesiastical governance.
