Overview
Jacqueline Denise Welch (born 22 May 1958) is an English actress and television personality whose work spans soap opera, prime-time drama, panel shows and reality television. She rose to national recognition in the 1990s and has remained a familiar face on British screens through acting roles and frequent appearances as a presenter and panellist. Beyond performance, Welch is also known for speaking openly about personal challenges, including mental health and addiction, and for writing and broadcasting about those experiences.
Career highlights
Welch first became widely known for long-running parts in British drama series. She played Natalie Barnes in the ITV serial Coronation Street (1997–2000) and was the French teacher Steph Haydock in the BBC school drama Waterloo Road (2006–2010). Earlier television work included significant roles in dramas such as Spender (1991–1993), Soldier Soldier (1993–1995) and the family series Down to Earth (2004–2005). Her versatility has allowed her to move between continuing drama, limited series and guest appearances.
Television personality and reality TV
Outside acting, Welch became a regular panellist on the daytime chat show Loose Women, first appearing in 2002 and then in longer runs from 2005–2013 and returning from 2018 onwards. Her presence on the programme emphasised candid discussion and personal anecdotes. Welch also participated in celebrity reality formats: she was a contestant on Dancing on Ice in 2011 (partnered with professional skater Matt Evers) and won the ninth series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2012.
Later work and notable roles
In late 2020 Welch joined the cast of the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, portraying Trish Minniver; she made her on-screen debut in January 2021 and departed the programme in January 2022. Her later credits reflect a career that mixes continuing drama, short-term arcs and appearances that draw on her recognisable public profile.
Public life and advocacy
Welch has used her platform to discuss issues such as depression and addiction in interviews and on television, contributing to wider public conversations about mental health. She has described the ways in which personal difficulties intersected with professional life and has supported greater openness about treatment and recovery. These aspects of her public role have been as visible as her on-screen work.
