Biotic (living components of ecosystems)
Biotic describes living organisms—animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms—and their roles, interactions, and influence on ecosystems, biodiversity, and human activities.
In ecology, the term biotic refers to anything that is alive or produced by living organisms. Typical examples include animals, plants, fungi, and microscopic life such as bacteria and protists often described as microbes. Together these organisms make up the living portion of an ecosystem and interact with one another and with the nonliving, or abiotic, factors of their environment.
Key characteristics of biotic entities
Organisms classified as biotic share several fundamental properties. They are typically made of cells, obtain and use energy, grow and develop, reproduce, maintain internal stability, respond to stimuli, and can adapt over generations by evolution. These features distinguish living components from rocks, water, air and other abiotic elements.

Biotic components perform distinct functions that sustain ecosystems. They are often grouped by role:
- Producers (autotrophs) that convert energy into organic matter.

The adjective "biotic" comes from the Greek root for life, and the concept arose as naturalists and later ecologists distinguished living communities from physical surroundings. In modern science, biotic is paired with "abiotic" to describe the two fundamental sets of factors that determine habitat conditions and ecosystem processes.
Human relevance and notable distinctions
Biotic elements underpin ecosystem services that people rely on—food production, pollination, decomposition and disease regulation among them. Human actions alter biotic communities through habitat change, species introductions, pollution and climate change. Some boundaries remain scientifically interesting: viruses, for example, sit at the edge of living/nonliving definitions, and microbial life can dominate in abundance and biochemical influence though it is often invisible without instruments.
