Legal career and background

Before his appointment as Governor‑General, Husbands had an established career in law. He was appointed Queen's Counsel (QC), a title denoting seniority and distinction in the legal profession, and was widely regarded for his experience and service in Barbados's legal circles. His knowledge of constitutional practice informed his later role as the head of state’s representative.

Duties, appointment and tenure

Husbands was appointed Governor‑General in 1996 following the death of his predecessor. In that capacity he performed the customary duties of the office: giving assent to legislation, opening parliamentary sessions, receiving foreign dignitaries, and supporting community and charitable causes. The role also carries reserve constitutional powers exercised on advice from elected ministers. He remained in office for over fifteen years and retired on 31 October 2011.

Honours, personal life and death

Sir Clifford received a number of honours during his life in recognition of his public service, including senior orders and titles associated with his viceregal role. He was married to Lady Ruby Husbands (née Parris), who predeceased him on 7 July 2009. Sir Clifford died suddenly of a heart attack on 11 October 2017 at the age of 91.
