Overview

Princess Christina (born Maria Christina; 18 February 1947 – 16 August 2019) was a member of the Dutch royal family known for her work in music and education. She was the youngest of four daughters of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, and the youngest sister of Beatrix. Christina combined an official royal background with a quieter, professionally creative life.

Early life and health

Christina was born at Soestdijk Palace in Baarn, Netherlands. During her mother’s pregnancy the family was affected by an epidemic and Queen Juliana contracted rubella; as a result, Christina was born with severe visual impairment. Contemporary reports describe her as nearly blind from birth, which shaped aspects of her upbringing and education. Her godfather was the British statesman Winston Churchill.

Family and upbringing

She grew up in a prominent household with three older sisters and a significant public profile because of her parents' roles. The sisters were raised with a mixture of private family life and public duties, and Christina’s childhood was marked by care for her special needs as well as exposure to the cultural and charitable interests of the royal family.

Career: music and education

Rather than pursuing a full-time public role within the monarchy, Christina focused on creative and educational pursuits. She trained in music and became known as a singer and music educator. Throughout her life she performed on occasion, took part in musical projects and worked with students and organizations related to the arts. Her professional path illustrated a balance between personal vocation and the expectations placed on a member of the royal house.

Public role and later life

Although Christina rarely occupied the central ceremonial role of senior royals, she remained part of the family’s public narrative through appearances and charitable association. In the final years of her life she lived more privately. In June 2018 it was reported that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer; she died on 16 August 2019 at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague at the age of 72.
