Chedwyn Michael "Ched" Evans (born 28 December 1988) is a Welsh professional footballer who plays as a striker. He was born in St Asaph, Denbighshire, and came through the youth system at Chester City before being signed by Manchester City as a teenager. Evans established his reputation as a goalscorer at club level and has been the subject of significant public attention both for his performances on the pitch and for legal proceedings off it.
Early career and club football
Evans left Chester City's youth setup for Manchester City's academy in 2002 and later joined Sheffield United, where he became a regular first-team player. In 2009 he moved clubs in a transfer reported to be worth around £3 million. Across his career he has been known for his pace, direct running, and ability to lead the line in opposing defences.
Legal case and aftermath
In 2012 Evans was convicted of rape and was sentenced to a term of imprisonment; he was released on licence in 2014 after serving part of that sentence. The case attracted extensive media and public attention. In 2016 the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction and a retrial was ordered; at that retrial a jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The sequence of conviction, appeal and acquittal has been the subject of commentary about criminal process, rehabilitation, media coverage and the impact on victims and alleged offenders.
Return to football and public response
Following the appeal and acquittal Evans returned to senior professional football. His return prompted varied responses from clubs, fans, commentators and organisations, illustrating how high-profile legal cases can affect an athlete's career and public image. Discussions around Evans's case have influenced debates on background checks, club policies and sponsorship decisions in sport.
Playing style and legacy
On the field Evans has been described as a traditional centre-forward: strong in the air, good at holding up play and able to finish chances inside the penalty area. His career highlights include important goals and spells as a leading scorer for his clubs. Off the field, his case remains a notable example of how legal controversies can intersect with professional sport, affecting clubs, teammates and supporters.
