Affleck was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts and grew up near Boston. He is the younger brother of Ben Affleck, with whom he appeared in several early projects. He began acting as a child and gradually moved into adult roles, working in both mainstream studio films and smaller independent productions.
Notable roles
- Good Will Hunting (1997) — an early high-profile appearance as a friend of the central characters.
- Ocean's Trilogy — recurring supporting role as Virgil Malloy in the heist series.
- Gone Baby Gone (2007) — lead role as private investigator Patrick Kenzie in Ben Affleck's directorial debut.
- The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) — a critically acclaimed turn as Robert Ford that earned industry recognition.
His performance in Jesse James earned an Academy Award nomination; the film and his portrayal were singled out by critics for their subtlety and emotional depth. The nomination was in the Academy Award categories and specifically recognized as Best Supporting Actor.
Directing and later career
Affleck has worked behind the camera as well as in front of it. He directed and produced projects that range from experimental documentary-style films to intimate character dramas. His lead role in Manchester by the Sea brought him widespread acclaim and the top acting honor at the Academy Awards. He later wrote and directed feature films that continued his interest in small, character-driven storytelling.
Critics often describe Affleck's acting as low-key and interior: he tends to underplay emotion, allowing small gestures and silences to define a character. That approach has earned him both praise and occasional debate about his casting in larger studio pictures versus independent films.
Affleck's public image is shaped by his professional collaborations, awards, and a relatively private personal life. He has faced allegations regarding conduct on some productions; such matters received media attention and were addressed through legal and professional channels. Despite controversy, his body of work remains influential to many observers of contemporary American independent cinema.
