Bret Peter Tarrant McKenzie (born 26 June 1976) is a New Zealand entertainer best known for his work as one half of the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords and for his songwriting and acting. He rose to international attention through live comedy, radio and television, and later earned major film industry recognition for original songwriting and small acting roles in high-profile movies.

Career and creative roles

McKenzie combines musical skill, deadpan comedy and an ear for pastiche. With partner Jemaine Clement he performed comic songs that imitate and satirize folk, pop and other genres; those performances moved from local stages to a BBC radio series and then to an HBO television series that reached a worldwide audience. Beyond the duo, McKenzie has written songs for film, worked as a performer, and been credited as a producer on selected projects.

Notable works and awards

He received widespread acclaim for writing the song "Man or Muppet," which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for The Muppets (2011). The Flight of the Conchords recordings and television work also brought awards and nominations, and the pair have a reputation for clever, musically literate comedy that influenced later performers in musical comedy.

Film and acting

In addition to songwriting, McKenzie has appeared on screen in character parts and cameos. He worked with director Peter Jackson on small roles in the film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, and he has participated in other film and television projects where his musical skills were an asset.
