Political career

Crvenkovski first became prime minister shortly after Macedonia declared independence, leading a government that navigated the early post‑Yugoslav transition. He held the office from 1992 until 1998, and returned as prime minister for a second term from 2002 until 2004. In 2004 he won the presidency and served a single five‑year term, choosing not to seek re‑election in 2009. His successor as president was Gjorge Ivanov.
