Barry O'Farrell

Political career and premiership

O'Farrell became leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party in 2007 and remained in that role until 2014. Under his leadership, the Coalition campaigned on themes of economic management, infrastructure and public services reform, and won a decisive victory in the 2011 state election, replacing a long-standing Labor administration. As Premier he chaired the cabinet and directed state policy across areas including transport, health, education and regional development, and placed particular emphasis on the needs of Western Sydney.

Resignation and aftermath

In April 2014 O'Farrell resigned as Premier after acknowledging that he had given misleading evidence to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). He announced his intention to step down on 16 April 2014 and formally resigned the following day. The NSW Liberal Party elected Mike Baird as its new leader, and Baird was sworn in as Premier on 23 April 2014.
