Michael Bruce "Mike" Baird (born 1 April 1968) is an Australian former politician who served as the 44th Premier of New South Wales from April 2014 to January 2017. A member of the Liberal Party, he represented the coastal seat of Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 2007 until his resignation from politics in 2017.

Early life and pre-political career

Baird grew up in a family with a political background: his father, Bruce Baird, served as a federal politician. Prior to entering state parliament he worked in the private sector and took part in community and faith-based organisations. This mix of business, community involvement and family political connections shaped his practical, managerial style in public office.

Political rise and offices held

  • Member for Manly (NSW Legislative Assembly), 2007–2017 — Manly
  • Treasurer of New South Wales, 2011–2014 — in the O'Farrell government
  • Premier of New South Wales, 2014–2017 — 44th Premier
  • Also served as Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Western Sydney while Premier

He entered the Treasurer's office following the Liberal–National Coalition victory in 2011 and took over as Premier after the resignation of Barry O'Farrell in 2014. His administration emphasised large-scale infrastructure projects and efforts to strengthen the state's fiscal position.

Policies, approach and public reception

Baird's government advanced a program of transport and infrastructure projects, advocated budget repair and supported reforms intended to attract private investment in public services. These priorities won praise from some business groups and fiscal conservatives for discipline and forward planning. At the same time, some decisions — particularly those touching on planning, transport and public assets — provoked public debate and political controversy.

In January 2017 Baird announced his resignation from the premiership and parliament, citing personal and family reasons; he was succeeded as Premier by Gladys Berejiklian. Since leaving office he has remained a public figure in commentary and community circles.
