Arun Jaitley (28 December 1952 – 24 August 2019) was an Indian lawyer and politician who rose to prominence as a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as Union Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs from 2014 to 2019 and was a leading voice in the Rajya Sabha, where he was Leader of the Opposition from 2009 to 2014 (Rajya Sabha). Known for his legal acumen and parliamentary skills, Jaitley played a central role in national fiscal policymaking during the first full term of the Narendra Modi government.
Early life and legal career
Trained as an attorney, Jaitley established a reputation as a constitutional and commercial lawyer before he became a full-time politician. His law practice and public speeches earned him recognition across political lines and provided a foundation for later ministerial responsibilities. Over decades he combined courtroom work with active party organisation, becoming one of the BJP's most visible parliamentarians.
Political career and government posts
Jaitley's parliamentary career included multiple cabinet and leadership roles. Beyond his tenure as Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Minister (2014–2019), he was frequently entrusted with important assignments and temporary charge of ministries, including brief periods as Minister of Defence in 2014 and 2017. From 2009 until 2014 he led the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, articulating the BJP's positions during a period of single-party governance by the rival coalition.
Economic policy and notable actions
As Finance Minister, Jaitley presented several Union Budgets and managed fiscal policy amid significant structural changes to India's taxation and regulatory frameworks. His ministry oversaw the constitutional and legislative steps that led to the nationwide implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a major indirect tax reform intended to unify state and national levies. He also guided budgetary responses to macroeconomic developments and reform agendas aimed at improving the business environment and corporate regulation.
Reputation and political style
Jaitley was widely regarded for his oratorical skill, ability to explain complex legal and economic topics, and calm, conciliatory presence in parliamentary debates. Colleagues and commentators often highlighted his legal background as shaping a methodical approach to policy and negotiation. He occupied a central place in the BJP's leadership team and was considered an influential strategist on legislative matters.
Health, final months and death
Jaitley had a history of diabetes. In January 2019 he was diagnosed with a rare form of soft-tissue cancer and travelled abroad for treatment (diagnosis, treatment in New York). In early August 2019 he was admitted to hospital in New Delhi with serious respiratory complications (hospitalised in New Delhi) and remained under intensive medical care. He died on 24 August 2019; official reports attributed his passing to complications related to his underlying health conditions.
