Arun Jaitley (28 December 1952 – 24 August 2019) was an Indian lawyer and politician who rose to prominence as a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as Union Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs from 2014 to 2019 and was a leading voice in the Rajya Sabha, where he was Leader of the Opposition from 2009 to 2014 (Rajya Sabha). Known for his legal acumen and parliamentary skills, Jaitley played a central role in national fiscal policymaking during the first full term of the Narendra Modi government.

Trained as an attorney, Jaitley established a reputation as a constitutional and commercial lawyer before he became a full-time politician. In early August 2019 he was admitted to hospital in New Delhi with serious respiratory complications (hospitalised in New Delhi) and remained under intensive medical care. He died on 24 August 2019; official reports attributed his passing to complications related to his underlying health conditions.
