Andoni Zubizarreta

Club career

Zubizarreta emerged from Basque football and established himself as Athletic Bilbao’s starting goalkeeper at a young age. In 1986 he moved to FC Barcelona, where he was the club’s principal goalkeeper through much of Johan Cruyff’s "Dream Team" era. During his time at Barcelona he contributed to several La Liga title campaigns and was part of the squad that won the European Cup in 1992. He left Barcelona in the mid-1990s and spent his final top-level years with Valencia CF, retiring from professional play in 1998. Zubizarreta was Spain’s regular goalkeeper for more than a decade. He earned more than 120 international caps and for a period held the record as Spain’s most-capped player.
