Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga (born 23 May 1956) is a retired Spanish footballer best known for his role as a central defender during the 1970s and 1980s. A native of the Basque Country, he built his reputation at Athletic Bilbao before moving on to other clubs and representing Spain at international level. His career combined strong positional play with a particularly physical style of defending.

Playing style and position

Goikoetxea operated mainly as a centre back. He was recognized for aerial strength, tight marking and a willingness to commit to robust challenges. These attributes made him an effective presence in defence but also brought controversy: he was involved in a number of high-profile tackles that drew public attention and debate about the limits of physical play in football.

Club and international career

Most of Goikoetxea's club career was spent with Athletic Bilbao, where he helped his side compete in domestic competitions and earn a strong defensive record. He later spent time with other Spanish teams, continuing to apply his experience at the top level. Internationally he earned caps for the Spain national team and took part in fixtures for his country during his peak years. Incidents and reputation

During his career Goikoetxea became a polarizing figure. While admired by supporters for commitment and leadership, some of his tackles caused serious injuries to opponents and generated controversy in the press and among peers. These episodes have been widely discussed in accounts of the era and contributed to an enduring public image that mixes respect for ability with debate over aggression in sport.

Later career and legacy

After retiring as a player he remained involved in football, working in coaching and youth development roles. His experience as a top-level defender and as a Basque sporting figure gave him authority in mentoring younger players. Historically he is remembered both for his contribution to his clubs and country and for the broader conversations his style of play prompted about discipline and safety on the field.
