Early life and career beginnings

Garfield was born in Newark, New Jersey, into a Jewish family and later adopted the stage name Allen Garfield. He began acting professionally in the 1960s and gradually built a reputation for dependable supporting performances. Directors often cast him when a scene required a memorable, layered personality rather than a traditional leading man.

During his long career Garfield appeared in acclaimed directors' films as well as popular commercial pictures. He worked with prominent filmmakers and was part of several influential ensemble casts.
