Alfredo Biondi (29 June 1928 – 24 June 2020) was an Italian lawyer and politician notable for a long parliamentary career and for holding ministerial posts in governments of different political orientations. He served briefly as Minister of Justice in the first cabinet led by Silvio Berlusconi (first Berlusconi cabinet) in 1994 and earlier as Minister of the Environment in the Bettino Craxi government from 1983 to 1984 (Bettino Craxi).
Political career and affiliations
Biondi began his national political career with the Italian Liberal Party, representing liberal traditions in post‑war Italian politics. After the realignment of the Italian party system in the early 1990s he joined Forza Italia and continued to play an active role in public life. His background as an attorney informed his parliamentary work and his approach to issues of justice and governance.
Parliamentary service and offices
Biondi was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in multiple legislatures and had a remarkably long presence in Italy's lower house. He served as a Deputy from 1968 to 1972 and again from 1979 until 2006. After leaving the Chamber he was a member of the Senate of the Republic as a Senator from 2006 to 2008. Earlier ministerial responsibilities included the environment portfolio, where he served during the early 1980s, and the justice portfolio during a formative, short-lived center‑right government in 1994.

Background and legacy
Biondi was born in Pisa and trained as a lawyer before entering national politics. His career spanned decades of Italian political transformation: from the First Republic through the upheavals of the 1990s and into the reconfigured party landscape of the early 21st century. Colleagues and observers viewed him as a representative of the liberal tradition in Italy who adapted to changing political currents while maintaining a professional legal identity.
He died on 24 June 2020 in Genoa at the age of 91. His long tenure in Parliament and service in cabinets of differing composition illustrate both personal longevity and the broader shifts in Italian politics during his lifetime.
