Alan Davies (born 6 March 1966) is an English comedian, writer and actor whose work spans stand-up comedy, scripted drama, panel shows and books. He became widely known for starring in the mystery series Jonathan Creek and for his long-running role as a regular panellist on the comedy quiz programme QI.
Early life and education
Davies was born in Loughton in Essex and spent his childhood in Chingford, on the outskirts of London. His upbringing and early family experiences — including the death of his mother when he was young — have been referenced in his autobiographical writing and on stage. He studied drama at the University of Kent, graduating in 1988, and began developing a profile as a performer and writer soon after.

His comedy is often described as observational and anecdotal, combining personal recollection with dry wit.
