Ayatollah Abbas Vaez-Tabasi (Persian: آیتالله عباس واعظ طبسی) was a senior Iranian Shia cleric and administrator born on 25 June 1935 and deceased on 4 March 2016. He is widely known for his long leadership of the religious and charitable complex centered on the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. As a public figure he combined religious authority with administrative responsibilities and membership in several national institutions.
Roles and responsibilities
Vaez-Tabasi served as the head of the Astan Quds Razavi, the foundation that manages the Imam Reza shrine and its endowments, from the year of the Iranian revolution in 1979 until his death in 2016. During this period the office he led exercised a broad portfolio of activities that included overseeing religious services, charitable distributions, cultural programs and a range of economic enterprises connected to the shrine complex. He also held memberships and advisory positions in various state and religious bodies (institutional memberships).
Background and development
Born in the town of Tabas and associated with the major holy city of Mashhad (Mashhad), Vaez-Tabasi emerged within Iran's clerical establishment in the mid-20th century. Over decades he became a prominent local and national figure by combining traditional religious standing with a managerial role over one of the country’s most important religious endowments. His tenure reflected the close interaction between religious institutions and public life in post-revolutionary Iran.
Influence and legacy
His multi-decade leadership made him a key steward of pilgrimage activities, charity distribution and cultural initiatives linked to the shrine. Observers note that the office he held plays an outsized role in the social and economic life of Mashhad and in broader networks of religious philanthropy. Vaez-Tabasi’s long incumbency shaped institutional priorities and established administrative precedents that continued after his death.

Vaez-Tabasi died in Mashhad on 4 March 2016 from respiratory failure (respiratory failure), having been treated for lung cancer (lung cancer). His passing at the age of 80 marked the end of one of the longest tenures leading Iran’s most prominent shrine administration and prompted reflection on the role of religious endowments in Iran’s social and cultural life.
