Overview
Bevaix was a lakeside municipality in the district of Boudry within the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Positioned along the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, the locality combined residential areas with agricultural plots and local commerce. As a discrete administrative unit it managed local services, planning and community life until a municipal reorganisation at the start of 2018.
Geography and environment
The settlement occupies terrain typical of the Jura piedmont: gentle slopes leading down to the lakeshore and farmland interspersed with small wooded areas. Its waterside position shaped both historical transport links and modern recreational use: promenades, boat access and viewpoints over the lake are part of the local setting. The region's climate and soils also support mixed agriculture and small-scale horticulture.
History and municipal merger
Bevaix has a long local history as a village and parish within the region of Neuchâtel. Archaeological finds in many lakeside communities indicate human presence in such areas since prehistoric and Roman times, and Bevaix shares in that broader regional heritage. In the 21st century administrative reform and local collaboration led neighbouring communes to combine resources.
On 1 January 2018 Bevaix joined with several adjacent municipalities to create a new administrative entity, La Grande-Béroche. The municipalities involved in that merger were:
- Saint-Aubin-Sauges
- Gorgier
- Vaumarcus
- Montalchez
- Fresens
- Bevaix (the former commune)
Economy, transport and culture
The local economy historically combined agriculture, services and small-scale industry, with many residents commuting to larger towns for work. Proximity to the lake and regional roads provides connections to broader markets and transport networks. Cultural life in the area has typically centered on community events, local associations and lakeside leisure activities; typical features include village festivals, community clubs and care for built heritage.
Current status and notable aspects
Today Bevaix is best understood as a component community within the larger municipality of La Grande-Béroche, contributing local identity, history and landscape to the new administrative structure. Visitors and researchers interested in Swiss municipal organisation often cite this merger as an example of small communes combining to improve service delivery and regional planning.
