Overview
Bas-Vully (French: Vully-le-Bas until 1977) was a municipality in the district of See in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. The community has both French and German historical names; in German it has been referred to as Niederwistenlach and Unterwistenlach. Administratively it was listed as a municipality under municipal records of the canton of Fribourg (Fribourg) in Switzerland.
Geography and economy
Bas-Vully occupied part of the slopes and lowlands around the hill known as Mont Vully, near Lake Murten. The landscape combines vineyard-covered terraces, mixed farmland and small settlements. Agriculture and viticulture have traditionally played an important economic role, complemented by small-scale tourism focused on walking, cycling and lake recreation.
History and administrative change
The locality was officially renamed from Vully-le-Bas to Bas-Vully in 1977. On 1 January 2016, Bas-Vully and its neighbour Haut-Vully completed a municipal merger and together formed the new municipality of Mont-Vully. The two former municipalities had maintained close cultural and economic ties, and the merger was part of a wider trend of municipal consolidation in Switzerland. Information about the neighbouring former municipality appears in local records under Haut-Vully.
Culture, sights and activities
The area is noted for panoramic views from Mont Vully across Lake Murten and the surrounding plain. Visitors and residents value the blend of Franco-German cultural influences, traditional village architecture and the rural wine landscape. Activities commonly associated with the region include vineyard visits, lakeside walks and exploring local heritage trails.
