Overview
Vaumarcus was a small lakeside locality and an administrative municipality (Vaumarcus) in the district of Boudry within the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Situated on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, the village combined residential areas, agricultural land and access to waterside paths. Its character was predominantly rural and community-oriented, with local services serving residents and visitors.
Geography and environment
The municipal territory included small lakeside slopes, low-lying fields and patches of woodland typical of the region. The setting provided open views across Lake Neuchâtel and supported mixed uses: arable farming, horticulture and some vineyards in suitable sites. Nearby wetlands and shoreline areas offered habitat for local wildlife and recreational opportunities such as walking and birdwatching.
History and administration
Vaumarcus has historical roots that extend back through the local region’s rural development, and like many small Swiss municipalities it operated with a modest local council responsible for planning, basic services and community matters. Over time demographic and administrative changes prompted discussion about how best to organise services and infrastructure across neighbouring communes.
Merger into La Grande-Béroche
On 1 January 2018, the former municipalities of Bevaix, Saint-Aubin-Sauges, Gorgier, Vaumarcus itself, Montalchez and Fresens were merged to form the new municipality of La Grande-Béroche. The consolidation reflected a wider trend in Switzerland toward municipal mergers intended to pool resources, improve administrative efficiency and strengthen local public services. After the merger, many administrative functions were transferred to the new communal authorities while local place names and heritage continued to be recognised within the larger municipality.
Community, economy and transport
Before the merger Vaumarcus’s economy was typical of small lakeside villages: a mix of agriculture, small local businesses and residents who commuted to larger towns for work. The village benefited from road links to neighbouring communities and to regional centres, and from access to recreational amenities on the lake that attract day visitors. Local culture has been expressed through community events, preservation of historic buildings and the maintenance of rural landscapes.
Significance and present status
Although small in size, Vaumarcus contributed to the cultural and natural diversity of the Lake Neuchâtel shoreline. Its incorporation into La Grande-Béroche aimed to secure sustainable services and coordinated planning while retaining the village’s identity and protecting local heritage sites within the new municipal framework.
