• Battle of Clontarf (23 April 1014): A pivotal encounter near Dublin in which High King Brian Boru was slain. The battle involved Irish forces and Viking allies; its outcome weakened Viking influence in Ireland but did not instantly create a united Irish kingdom.
• Battle of Kleidion (29 July 1014): Byzantine emperor Basil II defeated the Bulgarian army, a defeat that precipitated the decline of the First Bulgarian Empire. Medieval sources report mass blinding of prisoners after this battle.

In England the death of the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard and the continued campaigning of his son Cnut (Canute) produced instability.
