History and development

The site has long been settled because of its strategic position on routes linking Mesopotamia with Anatolia. In more recent decades Zakho expanded as cross‑border traffic and local administration grew, and institutions such as a city university were established to serve the population.

A major customs crossing nearby facilitates the movement of goods and people between Iraq and Turkey, supporting wholesale markets, logistics and services. The population is predominantly Kurdish, with communities of other ethnic and religious heritage present historically. Kurdish is the main language, alongside use of Arabic and smaller community languages. Cultural life includes local festivals, marketplaces and communal gatherings. Higher education is available locally; the city hosts a university that provides regional academic and vocational programs (Zakho University).

Zakho is known for several local landmarks and natural features. A traditional stone bridge—often called Delal Bridge—is one of the city's best known historical sights and a common cultural emblem. In sports, Zakho FC is the city’s main football club and a focal point of community support and local identity.
