Yutu (Jade Rabbit) lunar rover

Yutu (Jade Rabbit) is China’s six-wheeled lunar rover deployed by Chang’e‑3 in December 2013, carrying cameras, spectrometers and a ground-penetrating radar to study the Moon’s surface and shallow subsurface.

Overview

The Yutu, commonly called the Jade Rabbit, is a six-wheeled robotic rover developed by China to explore the Moon. It was delivered to the lunar surface by the Chang'e‑3 mission and touched down in December 2013, becoming the first soft landing on the Moon since 1976. The rover made its first short traverse on 14 December 2013 and was designed for extended surface science operations. Yutu had a mass of about 120 kg and a nominal top speed of roughly 200 metres per hour. After an initial productive period it became immobile after 42 days and ceased communications after approximately two years, but during its active operations it returned valuable data and demonstrated new capabilities in Chinese planetary exploration.

Design, mobility and systems

The rover’s architecture followed conventional small‑rover practice: six wheels for redundancy and stability, a solar power system for daytime operations, and thermal control to survive lunar day‑night cycles. Its mobility system allowed traverses across irregular terrain at modest speeds suitable for science work, while onboard navigation used cameras and sensors to plan short drives. To survive cold lunar nights, the rover and its lander employed heaters and hibernation procedures; repeated cycles of sunlit operation and night survival were a routine part of the mission plan.

Scientific instruments

Yutu carried a compact but diverse science payload to characterize surface materials and the near subsurface. Key instruments included:

  • Ground‑penetrating radar to probe stratigraphy beneath the rover and reveal layering down to several meters.
  • Spectrometers and cameras for visible, infrared and elemental studies to assess mineralogy and composition.
  • Engineering sensors and imaging systems used for navigation, context imaging and environmental monitoring.

These instruments complemented experiments on the Chang'e‑3 lander and provided direct, in situ information about the landing site’s geology and regolith.

Mission operations and results

The Chang'e‑3 mission used a Long March launch vehicle to place the lander‑rover stack on a translunar trajectory; the rover drove onto the surface from the lander to begin investigations. During its time active on the surface Yutu performed multiple short traverses, acquired panoramic and spectral imagery, and used its radar to detect subsurface layers and structures. These observations helped confirm that the landing site is dominated by volcanic basaltic materials and provided one of the first ground‑based radar profiles from a lunar rover platform. The mission also tested operational procedures for future Chinese robotic and human exploration.

Historical and cultural context

Yutu’s name originates in Chinese folklore: the Jade Rabbit is associated with the Moon goddess Chang'e and appears in an online naming poll that selected the moniker. The rover’s success marked a major milestone in China’s space program and signaled the country’s return to soft lunar landings after several decades. Technically and symbolically, Yutu helped establish a foundation for later missions in the Chang'e series.
