Yellow Line (CTA)

Route and stations

The line runs for about 5.1 miles (8.2 km) and functions primarily as a connector between northern suburbs and the CTA network. Stations are concentrated at the terminals with a single in-line stop: Howard, Oakton–Skokie, and Dempster. At Howard passengers can transfer to the Purple Line and the Red Line, providing onward access to other parts of the region. Unlike most other CTA routes, the Yellow Line does not serve the downtown Loop.

History

The service traces its origins to earlier suburban and interurban rights-of-way and was reintroduced in the late 20th century as a dedicated rapid shuttle commonly known as the "Skokie Swift." The name reflected its role as a fast, limited-stop connection; later the route was folded into the CTA's color-named scheme as the Yellow Line. Over time the line has seen infrastructure renewals and periodic service changes to maintain reliability and quick trips between terminals.

Operations and rolling stock

The Yellow Line is operated with equipment compatible with the rest of the CTA rapid-transit fleet and follows a frequent shuttle pattern during peak periods, with less frequent but regular service off-peak. Its short length allows the CTA to schedule relatively rapid turnarounds and maintain headways that emphasize transfer convenience at Howard rather than extensive local coverage.
