Overview

Wood County is a county in the state of Texas, located in the eastern portion of the United States. In 2010 the county population was 41,964. The county seat and administrative center is identified by the local government as the county seat, Quitman. The county retains a largely rural character, shaped by agriculture, timber, and small communities.

History and name

The area that became Wood County was settled in the mid‑19th century as roads and later rail lines encouraged agriculture and timber harvesting. The county was named for George T. Wood, who served as governor of Texas from 1847 to 1849. Local history reflects patterns common to eastern Texas: frontier settlement, clearing of land for farms, and the growth of small towns that served surrounding agricultural areas.

Geography and environment

Wood County features a mix of pine and hardwood forests, pastureland and small reservoirs. The county’s humid subtropical climate—hot summers and mild winters—supports a variety of crops and livestock and sustains forest industries. Small lakes and rivers provide habitat for wildlife and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Communities and population

Quitman serves as the legal and cultural center. The remainder of the county is composed of small incorporated towns and unincorporated settlements where local schools, churches and civic organizations form the core of community life. Population levels have varied with economic cycles in agriculture and timber.

Economy and land use

The local economy blends farming and ranching, forestry and light manufacturing services that support rural residents. Recreation related to lakes and hunting grounds contributes to the visitor economy. Transportation routes and regional markets link residents to larger urban centers for employment and services.

Recreation and culture

Outdoor recreation—fishing, hunting, boating and camping—is an important part of life and tourism in the county. Historic buildings, local fairs and community events help preserve the county’s heritage while supporting small‑town cultural life.

Government and services

County government is centered in Quitman and provides standard local services such as courts, public safety, road maintenance and land records. Schools are administered by independent school districts serving the county’s children.
