Overview
Wolfgang Bötsch (8 September 1938 – 14 October 2017) was a German politician and member of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria. Over three decades he served in representative bodies at state and federal levels, and is best known for his tenure as the final Federal Minister of Post and Telecommunications. For a concise biography see biographical summary.
Early life and political rise
Bötsch was born in Bad Kreuznach and began his political career within the CSU, Bavaria's conservative sister party to the CDU. He entered elected office in the mid-1970s, serving in the Landtag of Bavaria from 1974 to 1976. Additional background and local records are available through regional sources such as local archives.
Parliamentary and ministerial career
From 1976 until 2005 Bötsch represented his constituency in the German Bundestag. During this period he held various parliamentary responsibilities and rose to federal office. He belonged to the Christian Social Union caucus; party information and positions can be found at CSU resources.
In 1993 Bötsch was appointed Federal Minister of Post and Telecommunications, a post he held until 1997. His ministry coincided with a phase of structural change in Germany's communications sector; during the 1990s the state postal and telecommunications services moved toward corporatization and privatization, and the ministerial office itself was discontinued as responsibilities were reorganized. For context on communications policy of that era see policy overview.
Legacy and death
Bötsch is remembered as a long-serving parliamentarian and the last holder of a ministry that oversaw an important transition in public services. He retired from the Bundestag in 2005 and died on 14 October 2017 in Würzburg at the age of 79. Local reports and obituaries are catalogued at regional notices.
