Watford (commonly pronounced "wot-fud") is a substantial town and local government borough in the county of Hertfordshire, in the East of England. It sits on the River Colne and functions as both a commercial centre for its immediate area and a commuter town for people working in London, which lies to the south-east at roughly 17–18 miles from the town centre (Central London).

Location and transport

Watford occupies a strategic position close to major road and rail routes north-west of London. Its principal railway station, Watford Junction, provides frequent services to London terminals and to destinations across the Midlands and the north, while local roads link the town with neighbouring Hertfordshire settlements. The town centre lies near the River Colne and has developed on the river valley plain.

History and development

The settlement has origins as a medieval market place and expanded significantly from the 19th century onward with the arrival of railway connections and associated industrial and residential growth. Over time Watford evolved from a market town into a more diverse urban area with retail, service and light industrial sectors shaping its economy. It remains distinct from Hertfordshire's county town, Hertford, which retains the county administrative role (county town).

Economy, culture and notable places

Watford serves as a regional shopping and leisure centre, with a busy high street and major indoor shopping facilities near the town centre. Green spaces such as Cassiobury Park provide recreational opportunities for residents. The town is home to Watford Football Club, based at Vicarage Road, and nearby film and television production sites in Leavesden are a draw for visitors because of studio tours and exhibitions.

  • Sports: Watford F.C. and local sports facilities.
  • Parks: Large public parks including riverside areas.
  • Cultural attractions: Film studio tours and local theatres.
  • Transport: Watford Junction and frequent commuter services.

As of the 2011 census the town and borough together contained a population of around 132,000 people, making it the largest settlement in Hertfordshire by population while not being the county town. The town's role as both a local commercial centre and a commuter base for London continues to shape planning, housing and transport priorities.
