Overview

Wasco County is in north-central Oregon within the United States. The county combines river corridor communities along the Columbia River with more sparsely populated highland and foothill terrain. As recorded in the 2010 census, the population was about 25,213. The county seat and largest city is The Dalles, an historic river crossing and regional service center that has long served commerce and travel along the Columbia.

Geography and environment

Wasco County extends south from the Columbia River into the lower slopes of the Cascade Range. The Columbia River Gorge forms a significant northern corridor characterized by steep cliffs, scenic viewpoints and important river access. Climate ranges from semi-arid conditions on the plateau to cooler, wetter conditions at higher elevation, producing a variety of ecosystems from grassland and agricultural plain to mixed conifer forest.

History and origin

The area has a long Indigenous presence tied to Columbia River fisheries, trade and seasonal movements. Euro-American settlement increased in the 19th century with river navigation, overland migration routes and later rail connections. The county was organized in the mid-1800s and its name reflects local Indigenous groups historically associated with the basin.

Demographics and communities

Beyond The Dalles, the county contains small towns and unincorporated communities dispersed across rural districts. Population density is low outside the river corridor. Local school districts, community services and health facilities are concentrated in larger towns while many residents live on farms or ranches.

Economy and land use

Agriculture is central: dryland grains, orchards, vineyards and livestock are common. The Columbia River supports barge transport and hydroelectric infrastructure, which have influenced settlement and industry. Tourism and outdoor recreation—boating, fishing, hiking and scenic drives—add to the local economy, alongside public-sector employment and small manufacturing.

Transportation and services

Major highways and rail lines follow the Columbia River corridor, providing freight and passenger links. Local roads connect rural districts to The Dalles and other service centers. County government manages land-use planning, road maintenance and emergency services; residents access state and regional resources for additional services.

Recreation and notable facts

  • The Columbia River Gorge offers scenic vistas, water recreation and wildlife viewing.
  • Historic sites in The Dalles reflect river, trail and early rail history.
  • The county spans a transition from river lowlands to Cascade high country, offering diverse landscapes within one jurisdiction.
