Overview
Waimes (French name) or Weismes (German) is a municipality in eastern Belgium, located within the province of Liège. Positioned at about 50°24′N, 6°06′E, it lies on the edge of the High Fens (Hautes Fagnes), a raised moorland that forms part of the Ardennes uplands.
Location and landscape
Waimes occupies hilly, upland terrain with a cooler, wetter climate than much of Belgium. Peat bogs, heath and forest patches are typical in the higher zones. The area is valued for walking trails, cross-country skiing in winter and conservation of fragile High Fens habitats.
History and culture
Historically the East Cantons, including Waimes, experienced shifting borders and cultural influences between German- and French-speaking regions. After World War I the Treaty arrangements brought the area into Belgian administration, and today the municipality exists within Francophone Wallonia while retaining Germanic local traditions and bilingual place names in some villages.
Communities, population and economy
The municipality includes a number of villages and hamlets; local centres combine small-scale agriculture, crafts and service activities. In 2007 the population was recorded at 6,825 inhabitants, reflecting a sparsely settled, rural character. Tourism connected to nature and outdoor sports is an important seasonal contributor to the local economy.
Attractions and notable facts
- Access to the High Fens national nature reserve and marked hiking routes.
