Overview

Wadebridge is a town in north Cornwall, England, situated on the A39 and the south bank of the River Camel. The settlement owes its modern name and identity to the bridge that spans the river; the structure replaced a hazardous ford in the medieval period and became the focal point for local trade and travel. In 2001 the town's population was recorded as 6,351; later censuses show modest growth as the town expanded as a service and commuter centre.

Geography and transport

The town lies a few miles inland from Cornwall's north coast, with tidal reaches of the River Camel nearby. Wadebridge sits on a principal road route (the A39) linking much of northern Cornwall and providing road access to coastal towns. It is also a key point on the Camel Trail, a traffic-free route along a former railway line that is popular with walkers, cyclists and families travelling between Wadebridge, Padstow and Bodmin.

History and development

Originally a crossing place and local market, Wadebridge grew when a permanent bridge replaced the ford that had long been used to cross the Camel. The presence of a stable crossing encouraged markets, local crafts and river-based trade. Over subsequent centuries the town developed typical features of a Cornish market town: a high street of shops, civic buildings and a variety of small industries serving the surrounding rural area.

Economy, recreation and events

Wadebridge acts as a commercial and social hub for the north Cornwall hinterland. Local businesses include independent shops, cafes, and services that cater to residents and visitors. Recreation is a major attraction: the Camel Trail brings cyclists and walkers, the estuary supports boating and birdwatching, and the nearby showground hosts the Royal Cornwall Show and other large events that attract visitors from across the county.
