Benjamin Hielke de Roo (11 February 1940 – 17 May 2016) was a Dutch-born Australian artistic gymnast who represented his adopted country at two Olympic Games. Born in Enschede in the Netherlands, de Roo moved to Australia with his family in 1957 and became an Australian citizen in 1960. He is remembered as part of a post‑war wave of immigrant athletes who helped develop Australian competitive gymnastics.

Early life and migration

De Roo grew up in the eastern Netherlands before his family left for Australia when he was a teenager. The move in 1957 came during a period when many Dutch families emigrated seeking new opportunities abroad. Adapting to a new country, de Roo continued his involvement in sport and training that prepared him for national selection.

Gymnastics career

As an artistic gymnast, de Roo trained in the disciplines typical of men's competition and competed at state and national levels in Australia. Male artistic gymnastics generally encompasses several apparatus, and athletes of de Roo's era often trained across the entire men's program rather than specializing narrowly. His performances earned him selection to represent Australia at major international meets.

Olympic participation

De Roo competed for Australia at the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics. The 1960 Games were held in Rome and the 1964 Games in Tokyo, and both events brought together the leading gymnasts of the period. Competing on the Olympic stage signified de Roo's status among Australia's top male gymnasts of the early 1960s.

Later life and legacy

Having become an Australian citizen in 1960, de Roo lived in New South Wales in later years. He died on 17 May 2016 at a hospital in Katoomba, New South Wales, following complications related to a stroke, at the age of 76. His life is a reminder of the contributions immigrants have made to Australian sport and of the international character of gymnastics.

Further information about de Roo's life and career appears in contemporary Olympic reports and national sporting records.
