Vincenzo Cerundolo — immunologist and antigen presentation researcher
Italian immunologist (1959–2020) who led Oxford's MRC Human Immunology Unit and advanced understanding of how peptides and lipids are presented to T cells, informing cancer and viral immunology.
Vincenzo Cerundolo (20 December 1959 – 7 January 2020) was an Italian medical researcher and immunologist who combined laboratory discovery with leadership in translational science. He served as director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Human Immunology Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and held an academic post as a Professor of Immunology at the University of Oxford. He was also a Supernumerary Fellow at Merton College, where he contributed to teaching and mentoring of early-career scientists.

Cerundolo was born in Lecce, Italy, and established his career in the United Kingdom. He combined a sustained laboratory programme with running a major clinical research unit, building bridges between basic immunology and clinical application. He was a family man, married with two children, and was recognised by peers for both his scientific insight and his leadership. He died in January 2020 at the age of 60 and was honoured as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci).
